Decent into Patent Hell

In little over a week there have been two lawsuits filed against Google for patent infringement. First there was Oracle claiming patent infringement (http://gigaom.com/2010/08/13/oracle-vs-google-what-the-web-is-saying/) for Google's Android efforts, and yesterday there was Paul Allen's broad lawsuit (http://www.pcworld.com/article/204345/facebook_google_others_sued_by_paul_allen.html) against Google, Apple, AOL, Facebook and several other companies.

An Interesting Theist

John Shelby Spong is a retired Episcopalian Bishop with some very interesting points of view on Christianity. In fact it isn't the first time that I have seen the views of Christians tend toward Pantheist and Stoic beliefs and philosophies to this extent.

The Third Alternative

In the past there were essentially two camps to choose from when procuring your organisations software. You could either buy software “off the shelf” that met your needs, or develop software to meet your specific requirements. In some cases, such as word processing the choice was obvious. Similarly when a company needs to do a very specific job there is often no existing software leaving little choice but develop software from scratch. Now there is a third alternative.

Recently the Australian Government made a commitment (http://agimo.govspace.gov.au/2010/07/16/declaration-of-open-government) to Open Government.New Rule #1: You can't say you are committed to Open Government when you respond like this (http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/no-minister-90-of-web-snoop-document-censored-to-stop--premature-unnecessary-debate-20100722-10mxo.html?comments=186#comments) to a request for official information.New Rule #2: You can't say you are committed to Open Government while at the same time proposing to read peoples mail and listen in on their communications.New Rule #3: You can't say you are committed to Open Government while saying that it may lead to premature unnecessary debate.

Open Source for Users or Developers?

Is open source about giving software to users for nothing or creative
freedom for software developers? My question is rooted in the observation that most people I know who are "users" - that is people who are not able to program computers, but use computers, have little appreciation of open source, except as it gives them some nifty free - as in cost - software.
