For several weeks I have been filming the local family of Pukekos. They live in a small lake close to my place. The lake is surrounded by fencing, which makes the environment reasonably friendly to them. So far this season they have had two clutches, with one chick from each surviving. I have produced four Pukeko videos so far, about one each week, following the development of the chicks.

New boat in the pipeline

After several months of inactivity I am in the process of developing a new autonomous boat. This time around I am fixing several errors made in the first prototype. It will be a catamaran, which will make it quite a bit more stable. The solar panels will increase from 5 watt to 10 watt, and I am adding another battery. I am also making additions to the electronics package.
Nothing is quite as good as resource exhaustion for separating the well adapted from those not so well adapted. We are now in the grips of a recession which will no doubt challenge the IT industry. It is not the time for groundbreaking new technology, but it is the time to consider what is really of value in the IT field. Increasingly businesses are seeing value in solutions enabled by Open Source Software.

The Waterfall approach to Quality is to leave it to the end of the development to test for quality. The inevitable result is that the defects found need to be given back to developers. Since the testing occurs near the end of development this puts huge pressure on developers who are then more lightly to make further mistakes.
