The System Modeler was started in 2002 to address the need for something between EJB and raw JDBC. In a previous project we had coded all the JDBC functionality by hand into manually written data objects. This wasn't the run away success you would have thought. This got me thinking about how we could do it better, and between Mark Derricutt and myself we wrote a business modeling system.

Waterfall Lives

Many managers still believe that waterfall is the professional and responsible way to develop software despite evidence from the 1970's to now showing that it doesn't work. My experience however confirms that specifications no matter how carefully prepared need clarification and alteration, and that implementation is in fact design itself. Failure to adapt is to adapt to failure.

Devcentre implements Mambo Server

Today devcentre.org run by Peter Harrison, President of the New Zealand Open Source Society implemented the Mambo Server content management system. Mr Harrison is reported to be very pleased with the move, as it means less time will be spent maintaining the look and feel of the site, and more time can be spent on the actual content.
 
Open Source in Business

Open Source is starting to reach the light of day in the IT World. The primary flagships of Open Source are making serious inroads into the business computing world, with IBM making huge investments in Linux, and Apache web server continuing to host over 60% of web sites on the Internet.

So what is the role of Open Source in business? There are many hard questions about Open Source being asked, such as how to make Open Source pay, how will Open Source grow beyond the developers who develop it in their spare time? How will Open Source benefit the economy?

Iran Nuclear Standoff

Yesterday there was a report that US forces had been scouting Iran for targets in preparation for a preemptive strike against Iran. This was more than simply contingency planning, but rather preparation for an attack which would probably take out Irans nuclear weapons manufacturing capability. The same report indicated that this was being masterminded by neo conservatives in the US Government.
